Today, I drove up from Glasgow to Fort William in readiness for a Speyside Whisky Tour commencing tomorrow morning.
The journey was relatively uneventful with plenty of opportunities for photo stops on Rannoch Moor and around the Glencoe area.
On the way to Fort William the road runs parallel (for a short length) to the West Highland Way, a popular hiking trail which connects Fort William with Glasgow. This trail takes about one week to complete and was well patronised today.
Glencoe is best known for the stunning mountainous scenery and the infamous massacre of 1692 when a contingent of British Army comprised of Clan Campbell massacred about 38 local Clan MacDonald civilians.
Fort William has positioned itself as the Outdoor Capital of Scotland and attracts large numbers of visitors who participate in such activities as mountain biking, mountaineering, skiing, hiking and various water sports. The town is a good base for touring the Western Highlands. During the summer season visitors and train enthusiasts can travel on the very popular ‘Harry Potter’ steam train between Fort William and Mallaig, a service properly known as the Jacobite Express.
Weather today was mainly sunny and dry.
