View of Castle from Gardens

Balmoral Castle, Scotland

This evening, my theme is Balmoral Castle and Gardens which are located near Braemar in the Highlands of Scotland. Balmoral Castle is owned by HM the Queen in a private capacity having first being acquired by Queen Victoria in the 19th century. The Royal Family holiday here during August when the castle and grounds are closed to visitors. At certain times during the summer the grounds are open to the public plus one room (the ballroom) of the Castle.

The Castle sits on the banks of the River Dee and hence the local area through which the river flows is known as Deeside.

Mainly because of the Royal connection, Balmoral Castle attracts a large number of visitors during the season. It is quite a well run visitor attraction and can prove a worthwhile experience on a nice day. The extensive and wide ranging collection of mature trees plus colourful gardens and Highland scenery do not usually disappoint and I am quite happy to take guests there when in the area.

Elsewhere today:

  • I have arranged two Charles Rennie Mackintosh Tours. Interestingly these seem to be more popular with lady visitors than gentlemen!
  • Arranged some adjustments to two mini-coach tours scheduled for September.
  • Tried to help a visitor who wished to walk the length of Hadrian’s Wall with a dog. Unfortunately, dogs are not too popular with the accommodation providers along the Wall.
  • Posted information on Blackwood family history to my Glasgow Ancestry blog.

Weather in Glasgow has been mainly dry but cloudy and threatened rain from time to time. Apparently, tonight we should witness a spectaculuar ‘shooting star’ type display if the night sky is clear.
