Trophy, Old Course

Trophy, Old Course, St Andrews

This evening, I am focusing on the golfing scene at St. Andrews, home of the famous Old Course where golf is alleged to have originated around 600 yeas ago.

The Old Course is one of six Links courses. The others are: New Course,  Jubilee Course, Eden Course, Strathtyrum Course and Balgove Course.  Additionally, there is the Castle Course which is located on a cliff top site and benefits from stunning views.

Of course, the Old Course is the ‘holy grail’ for many golfers. To get a round requires either (a) participating in a ballot (lottery) for tee times or (b) signing up for a golf tour package including hotel accommodation. Latter is quite expensive. It is not widely appreciated that the Links courses (including Old Course) are owned by the community, not a corporation and when play is not in process the public are free to roam.

In the course of my Scotland tours I invariably include a visit to St. Andrews. In many cases guests insist on visiting the famous site. Below is an image of a happy tour group from last year. In addition to golf, St Andrews also has a (ruined) Cathedral, Castle and famous University. An interesting day can be spent here.

Elsewhere today, I have been occupied with the fine detail of upcoming tours including one group of 47 from Holland.
