Today was Day 2 of our private tour. this entailed visits to two distilleries plus an extensive drive through stunning Highland scenery.

We departed our lodgings at Garth Hotel, Grantown-on-Spey at 9.o0 am and then headed north to Glenfiddich, Scotland’s largest Distillery ranked by production volume.

As we were about 30 mins early for the tour we decided to embark on a mini tour of the locality taking in Balvenie Castle, a photo session of some local Highland Cattle and a brief trip to Balvenie Distillery which is part of the Glenfiddich Group.

Next, we returned to Gelnfiddich to join in the standard, free distillery tour which entailed  a short film followed by a tour which illustrated the malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation and maturation processes culminating in a tasting of three malts and then a visit to the distillery shop. This was a quality tour in keeping with Glenfiddich’s image.

After Glenfiddich we embarked on a two hour drive to Pitlochry passing through rugged Highland scenery which included a stop for lunch, two ski centres, Corgarff Castle and Braemar  Castle.

We arrived at Edradour Distillery just in time for the 3.00pm tour which proved a success. Edradour is the smallest distillery on Scotland. In addition the distillery shop has a wide variety of whisky for sale from both Edradour and other distilleries around Scotland. I was able to obtain a small supply of draff to assist with a bread-making experiment.

After some purchases at Edradour, we drove down to Dunkeld to assess an evening dinner venue. We also dropped into the Tay Bank pub where we were able to watch a couple of musicians in full flow on fiddle and guitar.
