Rhododendron in bloom

Rhododendron in bloom, Scotland

This evening, I am posting some recent images of rhododendrons taken at Kelburn Castle on the west of Scotland.

Touring around at this time of year provides access to a wide display of rhododendrons. The pretty and colourful flowers mask an invasive pest. This species was introduced to Scotland during the 19th century and continues to spread unchecked, thereby suppressing native flora. There are exist about 1000 species of rhododendron but it is the Rhododendron Poticum which is the most troublesome. The rhododendron may have originated in the Himalayas.
