Largs Seaside Town, Scotland
This afternoon, our small group visited Largs on the West of Scotland. This is a somewhat High End seaside town which was extremely busy today with many visitors and locals out enjoying the sun at about 22 C.
Our first stop was Kelburn Country Park which is dominated by Kelburn Castle, home to the Earls of Glasgow. This castle, parts of which date from the 13th century, is somewhat gaudily decorated, presumably to emphasise the ‘fun’ nature of the park in which it sits.

Kelburn is noted for its gardens. Here is an image of one of the many rhododendrons in full flower.

At the other end of the flora scale, here is a small patch of primroses in flower.

Kelburn recently suffered a flood which revealed some interesting geology. Note sudden change between red and pale sandstone. The red is Devoninan and is a function of iron oxide. The pale colour reflects when what is now Scotland was covered in sand dunes and lay close to the equator.

Here is a charming waterfall at Kelburn.

Here is a Snowy Owl, one of the raptors on dispaly at Kelburn.

Overall, a good trip on the first seriously warm day of 2011.
