Stones of Stenness, Orkney

Stones of Stenness, Orkney, Scotland

This evening, I am posting information on  another intriguing prehistoric site, namely the Standing Stones of Stenness which are situated 9 miles west of Kirkwall, Orkney Islands. This site may date from around 3000BC  (Late Neolithic) but, unfortunately, today’s remains are a shadow of the original which may have exceeded the  nearby Ring of Brodgar in terms of size and grandeur. Considerable damage to the stones occurred during the 19th century. The original stone circle may have been 104ft (31.7m in diameter) and comprised of 11 or 12 stones. The stones stood inside a rock-cut ditch some 19ft (5.8m) wide and up to 6ft 6″ (2m) deep. Outside this had been a bank maybe 21ft(6.4m) in width and 6ft (1.8m) in height.
