Inside Unstan Chamberd Cairn, Orkney

Inside Unstan Chamberd Cairn, Orkney, Scotland

This evening, I am focusing on the prehistoric cairn of Unstan located at Clouston, about 3 miles from Stromness.. This is a long, chambered cairn dating from the 3rd Millennium BC .The interior burial compartments are divided by upright stone slabs. A volume of pottery was found at this site with distinctive design. This has been designated as Unstan Ware. As will be noted from the images below, the entrance is very narrow, I had to navigate through on all fours!

The Vikings also discovered this cairn as evidenced by the existence of runic inscriptions in the interior.

Elsewhere today, my main preoccupation has been the design of a 10 day self-drive tour of Scotland and Ireland for U.S.couple during August.

Also learned that a two day tour of the Highlands for group of 15 persons which I arranged  has gone well, albeit it ran over time.
