Inside Dounby Click Mill, Orkney, Scotland

This evening, the focus of my blog is Dounby Click Mill on Orkney.

This type of a horizontal water powered mill has a long lineage, dating back to Viking times. I have visited a similar mill, Shawbost, on the Isle of Lewis. This particular mill was built in 1823 and was in use until 1920. Now restored under custodianship of Historic Scotland.

Location of the mill is 8 miles north east of Stromness. Other historic attractions in the vicinity include Broch of Gurness, Earl’s Palace and Cuween Hill Chambered Cairn.

Access to the mill is via a rough track. There is interesting flora and birdlife in the area.
