Alnwick Castle, Alnwick

Alnwick Castle, Alnwick, England

This evening, the focus of my blog is Alnwick Castle in northern England. Some key facts:

  • Situated on the banks of the River Aln.
  • Originally built in the 12th century to protect England’s northern border against the Scots.
  • Owned by the Percy family (Dukes of Northumberland) since 1309.
  • Played a leading part in the Wars of the Roses (15th C).
  • Reovated in 16th C and in 18th C; latter to designs of famous architect Robert Adam.
  • Futher interior renovation work was undertaken in 19th C under direction of Anthony Salvin.
  • Ranks as second largest inhabited castle in England.
  • Has featured in eight Harry Potter films as ‘Hogwarts’.
  • Adjacent to the Castle is a spectacular 42 acre garden which cost GBP42m. This includes an unusual poison garden.
