Auchentoshan Distillery, Glasgow

Auchentoshan Distillery, Glasgow, Scotland

This evening, my focus is on Auchentoshan, Glasgow’s only whisky distillery. This distillery has a long pedigree but its legal existence commenced 1823. It is one of Scotland’s small band of Lowland distilleries and as such triple distills the spirit-as opposed to the double distillation in the other whisky areas of Scotland. Result is a light, elegant whisky.

The two popular malts from Auchentoshan are the Classic (40pct) and the Three Wood (43pct). There is a also a 10 yr old and a 21 yr old. Sister distilleries are Glen Garioch (Highlands) and Bowmore (Islay).

There is an excellent tour available of the distillery.

Here is fermentation underway in a washback.

Being a Lowland distillery, the spirit is distilled three times, like Irish Whiskey.

Here is maturation under way in the company’s bonded warehouse. The casks are mainly ex-bourbon (from U.S.A.) and ex-sherry (Spain). Minimum maturation period is three years whilst Auchentoshan’s youngest malt is the classic which contains malts in the range 5-7 years old.
