Blair Atholl Distillery, Pitlochry

Blair Atholl Distillery, Pitlochry, Scotland

This afternoon, I am focusing on Blair Atholl Distillery, Perthshire  which is actually located in the popular tourist town of Pitlochry, and not the village of Blair Atholl which is situated some eight miles north.

Key facts concerning Blair Atholl Distillery:

  • Founded 1798 by John Stewart and Robert Robertson
  • Situated in the Highlands whisky region.
  • Long connection with Bell’s blend. Arthur Bell was using Blair Atholl malt in the mid 1800s.
  • Acquired by Arthur Bell & Sons in 1933 and now owned by international drinks conglomerate, Diageo.
  • Capacity is 2.5m litres per annum.
  • Equipped with a semi-lauter mash tun, four washbacks of stainless steel and four of larch, and two pairs of stills.
  • Most of the output goes into blends but a 12 year old Flora and Fauna can be purchased at the Distillery Visitor Centre.

From time to time I include Blair Atholl in my Scotland whisky tours.
