Dunvegan Castle, Isle of Skye, Scotland

This evening, I am focusing on Dunvegan Castle, one of the Isle of Skye’s top visitor attractions.

This castle is perfectly situated in the north of the island and fits in nicely with a day tour of Skye. Facilities include:

  • An extensive and well maintained garden.
  • Seal watching.
  • Washrooms and restaurant.
  • Interesting interior appropriate for an ancestral home dating back to the 1270s.

Historical features of note include:

  • Ancestral home of Clan MacLeod since 13th century.
  • Square keep (14th C) and Fairy Tower (16th C) suffered from remodelling in the 19th century.
  • Until 18th C only access was via a northern sea gate.
  • Due to depleted manpower, the MacLeods did not participate in the Jacobite uprisings of 1689 and 1715.
  • The castle fabric is undergoing an extensive restoration programme. Roof and windows phase has been completed leaving electrics, plumbing and heating.
