Talisker Scotch Whisky

Talisker Scotch Whisky, Isle of Skye

This evening, I am focusing on Talisker Distillery at Carbost, Isle of Skye, which is the only distillery on the island.  This distillery wsas founded in 1830 but subsequently had a chequered hsitory until acquired by the Distillers Group in 1915 and today is owned by the giant Diageo drinks company.

Until 1928 Talisker was tripled distilled like Lowland or Irish whisky. Today the spirit is double distilled through two of the five stills. A distinguishig feature of this distillery is the external wooden worm tubs used in the distillation process. These are now very unusual in the whisky industry.

Talisker produces about 1.9 million litres p.a of a peaty malt much of which disappers into blends including Johnnie Walker. Maturation is mainly undertaken in ex-Bourbon casks with the Distillers Edition subject to a final period in Spanish Amoroso (wine) casks.

Main products are:

  • 10 year old at 45.8pct (shown above).
  • 1986 Distillers Edition 45.8pct.
