Culzean Castle, Ayrshire
Culzean Castle, Ayrshire, Scotland
This morning, I collected my tour group from their Glasgow hotel and drove south, stopping first at Prestwick to drop off golfers who had a specific tee time booked at Prestwick Golf Club.
The non-golfers  and myself went down to Culzean castle and then to Alloway and the various Robert Burns sites.
Culzean Castle dates from the late 18th century and ranks as one of the finest examples of enlightenment architecture in Europe. It was designed by leading Scots architect , Robert Adam for the 10th Earl Cassilis. The Castle occupies a superb location, atop cliffs looking out to sea over the Firth of Clyde. There are extensive gardens and an orangery.
Our early morning arrival at Culzean was fortunate as we got well ahead of numerous large parties arriving by coach.
Guests toured the impressive neo-classical Georgian interior.
Next we drove about 30 mins north to Alloway, the birthplace of Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns (1759-1786). Here we availed of a light lunch and visited principal sites including:
  • Burns family burial sites at the ruined Auld Kirk.
  • Birthplace Museum.
  • Burns National Heritage Park
  • Burns Monument.
  • Brig o’ Doon
Tour ( and golfers) benefited from progressively improving weather as the day progressed.
After Alloway, we returned to Prestwick to collect the golfers ( who enjoyed the course) and then on, back to Glasgow and drop -off at hotel
