Sampling Scotch Whisky, Craigellachie

Sampling Scotch Whisky, Craigellachie, Scotland

This morning, I collected guest from Edinburgh lodgings and then drove north into Highland Perthshire where we called in at Edradour Distillery, near Pitlochry. This is Scotland’s smallest distillery with just two stills and output of 100,000 litres of spirit p.a. Here we joined a standard tour working through the malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation and maturation processes.Samples of the single malt were provided.

Overall, a comprehensive tour led by a knowledgeable guide.

Next, we drove up into the Highlands proper, stopping briefly for lunch at Spittal of Glenshee. The scenery was stark and remote with main life form comprising flocks of sheep which free roam over the landscape and roads.

We went through Braemar and then further north to Dufftown passing Glenlivet Distillery en-route. Incredibly, we encountered H M the Queen (with escort) on a remote road coming in opposite direction. She kindly pulled over to let us pass.

We duly arrived in Dufftown and then went on to Glenfiddich Distillery, probably Scotland’s largest producing about 10,000 litres of spirit for a worldwide market.

At Glenfiddich we participated in the standard tour lasting about 45 mins which covered the same basic processes as that at Edradour. A good tour but some of the tour guide’s commentary was drowned out by operational noise.

Next we checked into our lodgings and then went on to visit the famous Whisky Bar at nearby Craigellachie, home to some 700 plus single malts.
