Dufftown boasts a long history with evidence of early Christian sites dating back to around the 6th century AD. Mortlach (in which parish Dufftown is located) was one of the earliest Christian settlements in Scotland. The present parish church has features dating from around 1200 AD.

Unusually for Scotland, Dufftown is a planned town, which was devised by one James Duff (1776-1857) who financed the venture as work and accommodation for men returning from the Napoleonic Wars. There are wide streets with colourful floral displays and a wide range of shops. In the centre sits the prominent Dufftown Clock Tower.
