Gatehouse at Stokesay Castle, Shropshire

Gatehouse at Stokesay Castle, Shropshire

This evening, I am focusing on the incredibly well preserved, fortified medieval manor house known as Stokesay Castle which is located near Craven Arms  close to the Welsh border in Shropshire. Key features:

  • Built 1281-1291 by wealthy wool merchant, Lawrence of Ludlow.
  • Has experienced few changes since date of construction and thus, effectively, an architectural time capsule.
  • The Great Hall features a open hearth and timber roof.
  • Shuttered gable windows.
  • Medieval tiled floor in North Tower.
  • Gatehouse added in mid 17th century.
