This morning we departed our  Inverness lodgings and drove south, down the A9, to our destination of Dalwhinnie. During the approx. 75 min journey, the temperature progressively dropped, falling as low as minus 10 C at one point. Otherwise, weather remained clear with some snow flurries.

On arrival at Dalwhinnie we participated in a tour of the distillery ( one of Scotland’s top 15) which lasted about 1 hour, including tastings. The guide took us through the operations from malting and mashing to fermentation, distillation and maturation. Dalwhinnie has an average mean temperature of 6 degrees C, because of this whisky takes longer than average to mature resulting in Dalwhinnie’s core single malt product being a 15 year old.

After some purchases at Dalwhinnie, we moved on down the A9,stopping for a photo shoot of Blair Castle en-route, to our next destination of the Falls of Braan at Ossian’s Hall near Dunkeld. With some determination we navigated the ice and packed snow along the River Braan first to view one of the tallest trees in Britain ( a Douglas Fir) and then on to Ossian’s Hall and the spectacular view of the Falls which were encrusted with ice, as shown in the video clip below.

Next we went into nearby Dunkeld for a light lunch at the Atholl Arms Hotel and then resumed our journey along the A9, past Perth to our destination of Dundee on the east coast of Scotland. Due to a combination of early arrival and reasonable daylight we decided to pay a visit to nearby St. Andrews which is famous for:

  • Golf and the Old Course.
  • Ancient and respected university.
  • Ruins of medieval cathedral and castle.
  • Meeting place of royal couple, Wills and Kate.

After a visit to the St Andrews Links, a visit to the Cathedral and a  pleasant stroll around the town centre we returned to Dundee and checked into our hotel.
