Auchentoshan Distillery, Glasgow, Scotland

This morning, I collected my tour guests from central Glasgow and then proceeded to visit Auchentoshan ( Glasgow) and Tulliabardine ( Perthshire) whisky distilleries. On the return to Glasgow we called in at Doune Castle, near Stirling, which is famous for its role in the film ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’. A photo record of this tour is provided below.

Auchentoshan is the only major distillery in Scotland which uses the triple distillation process, all other distilleries use double distillation. Capacity of Auchentoshan is 1.75m litres p.a. whilst Tullibardine is 2.7m litres p.a.

Neither distillery was in production today, this being due to the seasonally influenced ‘silent season’ for holidays and maintenance. On the plus side we were able to inspect the manufacturing equipment at close quarters.

In both distilleries the whisky making process is essentially the same: malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation and maturation. The tours culminated in tastings of the respective single malts.

Overall, a successful day. We experienced some rain but the temperature was mild for time of year.
