Glenfinnan Viaduct, Scotland

This evening, I am focusing on the Glenfinnan Viaduct which forms part of the West Highland Railway line between Fort William and Mallaig which was constructed between 1897 and 1901, with the actual bridge constructed 1897-98.

The viaduct is located at the northern end of Loch Shiel, close to where ‘Bonnie’ Prince Charlie landed in 1745 in a doomed attempt to gain control of the thrones of Scotland and England by military force.

Facts and information concerning the viaduct:

  • Built entirely of concrete, a revolutionary form of construction in its day.
  • Comprises 21 arches.
  • Has featured in numerous films and TV productions including three Harry Potter films. The bridge has been unofficially re-named by some as the ‘Harry Potter Bridge’.
  • During the tourist season, many visitors come to watch the Jacobite Express steam train trundle across the bridge. Whenever possible, I time my tours to arrive at the bridge in time for the steam train crossing. Here is a video clip of the steam train:

The best vantage point to view the train crossing the bridge is a hill behind the National Trust Visitor Centre. This entails a steep scramble but visitors are also rewarded with views of Loch Shiel to the south.
