Other information on Kilmaurs:

  • Situated on the Carmel River.
  • Was known as Cunninghame until the 13th century.
  • Closely associated with Clan Cunningham.
  • In the industrial era focused on coal mining and the production of cutlery, shoes and bonnets.
  • Has a rail station.
  • The Parish Church of St. Maurs-Glencairn dates from 1170. It was enlarged in the 1400s and re-built in 1888. Attached to it is the Glencairn Aisle, which is a family mausoleum of the Earls of Glencairn.
  • There is a separate Glencairn Church dating from 1864 but this is no longer used for worship.

Overall, a pleasant small town with shops, cafe and welcoming to visitors. Should be included in a Clan Cunningham Tour.
