Corrie, Arran, Scotland

This evening, I am focusing on the village of Corrie which is located on the east coast of the Isle of Arran which in turn is a short distance off the west coast of Scotland.

Corrie sits on a rocky shoreline under the shadow of Goatfell ( a 2866 ft mountain). It is a pleasant and well kept village with school, hotel and church. It would appear that many of the properties are holiday homes (vacation rentals).

The shore faces east across the Firth of Clyde to North Ayrshire on the Scottish mainland. This offers a very pleasant aspect when visibility is clear.

In the small harbour is normally moored a replica Viking Longship. Arran was under Norwegian control until the 13th century and thus has a Viking heritage which is reflected in place names to this day. Each August there is a Viking themed Uphellya festival when the Longship is crewed and various reenactments take place.

The shoreline offers good prospects for ornithologists with a good number and variety of waterbirds to view.

An interesting spot to linger in course of a tour of Arran.
