  • Ferry to Port Ellen, Islay. Upon arrival we had lunch at the Islay Hotel and then proceeded to nearby Laphroaig Distillery where we were provided with a private tour and tasting lasting most of the afternoon. Here we visited the maltings floor and then learned about the mashing, fermentation, distillation and maturation processes resulting in a whisky with a high peat content. At end of the tour we were provided with samples of four malts of different ages. Some of the group received their Friends of Laphroaig certificates and went off to plant national flags on the allocated square foot of territory.
