Port Ellen, Islay, Scotland

This evening, I am focusing on Port Ellen which is the second largest town on the island of Islay and located in the south of the island.

Population of Port Ellen is about 1000 persons. Here, in close proximity to each other, are three well known Islay distilleries, Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig. There is also  a large maltings operation based on the former Port Ellen distillery. This supplies malt to most of the island’s distilleries, with specifications individually tailored.

Port Ellen is home to a complement of shops, commercial operations, hotels and other lodgings. There is also a marina for private boats. In the vicinity are many historical and archaeological sites.

Port Ellen is a major ferry terminal for Islay with direct link to Kennacraig on the mainland.

Port Ellen affords a good base for visitors wishing to tour Islay, particularly the whisky distilleries.
