Tour Group at Clansman, Loch Ness, Scotland

This morning, we departed our lodgings in Kyle of Lochalsh  and proceeded as follows:

  • First to nearby Eilean Donan Castle, a reconstructed castle now home to Chief of Clan Macrae. This castle has featured in numerous films including the Highlander.

  • Next we drove north tracking various lochs until we connected with Loch Ness, the largest body of fresh water in the British Isles. We stopped to visit Castle Urquhart which has a long history dating back to the 1200s. We had lunch here and viewed a short film on the local history.
  • At Castle Urquhart we connected with a boat trip on Loch Ness which lasted 30 minutes finishing at the Clansman visitor centre.
  • Next, we continued up to Inverness, capital of the Highlands. We drove through the city, over the River Ness to our next stop of Culloden Battlefield, site of last battle on British soil in 1746 at which Government forces under General Cumberland defeated a Jacobite army under Bonnie Prince Charlie and this sealed the end of Jacobite uprisings.
  • Next, to nearby Clava Cairns, a prehistoric site dating back over 4000 years. Here can be found three chambered burial tombs, each enclosed by a stone circle.
  • Next, we found our lodgings in Inverness after which group members indulged in shopping before dinner at Rocpool Restaurant in central Inverness.

Tomorrow, we drive south to Edinburgh visiting a distillery en-route.
