Auld Kirk, Alloway, Scotland

Thisd evening, I am posting information on the ruined Auld Kirk ( old church) at Alloway, Ayrshire, Scotland. This small ruin has achieved great fame and status as a visitor attraction due to connection with poet, Robert Burns who was born a short distance away.

The building is difficult to date with certainty but evidence suggests work was undertaken in 1516 although its origins may go back to the 13th century. As a Christian place of worship the site could go back much further in time.

The site is particulary notweworthy for the following reasons:

  • As setting for witches and warlocks in Burns’ 1791 poem Tam o’Shanter.
  • As burial place for Burns’ parents, William Burns and Agnes Brown.
  • Collection of pictorial gravestones.
