Common Seal, Dunvegan, Scotland

This evening, I am posting information on today’s private tour of the Isle of Skye off the west coast of Scotland.

This morning, we departed our lodgings in Kyle of Lochalsh, headed west over the Skye Bridge and proceeded as follows:

  • First stop Sligachan for views of the Cuillin Mountains and River Sligachan. Visibility was hindered by low clouds but, fortunately, no rain.

  • Next, north to Dunvegan Castle. Here we joined in a small boat tour to view the large colony of common seals basking on the rocks. Very exciting to gain close proximity access to the animals. This trip was followed by a quick tour of Dunvegan Castle interior.

  • Next, we continued in a clockwise direction, stopping first at Uig for a break and to explore the various craft and local shops including Isle of Skye Brewery.

  • Next, east along a very narrow road cutting across the north of the island, encountering many sheep en-route- to our destination of the Quiraing, site of a rugged scenery caused by a massive landslip some 70m years ago. Great photo opps with views towards mountainous scenery on the mainland.

  •  Next, down the eastern side of Skye, stopping first to view Kilt Rock and waterfall. Then on past the Old Man of Storr, another volcanic era landslip, down a single track road to Portree, capital of Skye. Here we visited the harbour, saw the Isle of Skye Pipe Band performing and availed of dinner at a local hotel.
