Aberlour, Scottish Highlands

This evening, I am focusing on the Highland town of Aberlour, full name Charlestown of Aberlour. ‘Aber’ is an ancient Brittonic ( Welsh) name meaning confluence of waters which is very opposite for it is here that the Lour Burn (stream) joins the River Spey.

Salient information on Aberlour:

  • Located on banks of the River Spey and close to the heart of the Speyside whisky producing area. Close by can be found Craigellachie, Glenfiddich, Balvenie, Macallan, Glen Grant, Glenfarclas, Tormore and more distilleries. In the town itself is the eponymous Aberlour Distillery.
  • Opportunities for salmon and trout fishing in/on the River Spey.
  • Tours of Aberlour Distillery are available.
  • At north end of town is the Walkers Shortbread manufacturing facility and outlet shop.
  • Aberlour is well endowed with shops, pubs, restaurants and eateries. A good spot for lunch during a tour of Speyside distilleries.
