Wemyss Ware from Ceres, Fife, Scotland

This evening, I am posting information on a unique, small pottery in the east of Scotland which specialises in a range of hand painted pottery products using a style dating back to 1882.

The story of this pottery is as follows:

  • First produced 1882 in nearby Kirkaldy. Head decorator at time was Karel Nekola. The unique and popular style was hand painted with bright colours and cheerful designs.
  • The Kirkaldy pottery closed in 1932 but production continued in the Devon, England town of Bovey Tracey by Joseph Nekola (son of Karel) and his trainee, Esther Weeks..
  • The Bovey Tracey operation closed in 1957.
  • Production re-started in Ceres, Fife by Griselda Hill in 1985. This enterprise has proved a success.
  • The pottery now produces a wide range of products using the services of ten employees. At Ceres there is a shop and visitor centre where visitors can view both finished products and experts at work.
