Fireworks, Nov 5th., Glasgow

This evening, I attended a fireworks display to commemorate a failed terrorist attack on November 5th 1605.

The event has anti-Catholic overtones because it celebrates the failure of a group of Catholic conspirators to blow up the House of Lords in London, England at a sitting where King James I (England) /James VI (Scotland) was in attendance.

November 5th is widely celebrated in the British Isles as ‘Bonfire Night’ or ‘Guy Fawkes’ Night’. Guido (Guy) Fawkes was one of the leading conspirators. He was caught, tortured and executed.

This annual event serves to enliven an otherwise dull, pre-winter evening.
