Ayr Beach, S.W. Scotland

Today, Christmas Day, I visited Ayr in S.W. Scotland. Ayr is a pleasant town located about 1 hour SSW of Glasgow.

Ayr has long been popular with holidaymakers aided by its clean, sandy beach and mild climate. The town dates back to medieval times and boasts connections with both Robert Burns (Scotland’s National Poet) and William Wallace ( aka ‘Braveheart’).

In common with rest of the U.K., Ayr was buffeted by strong winds. However, temperature was relatively mild and sunshine featured through most of the day.

The beach was popular today with locals exercising themselves and their dogs. Other aspects of the beach:

  • Has been awarded a Seaside Award from Keep Scotland Beautiful.
  • Offers good views of the local coast plus opportunities for picnics and sandcastle building.
  • Close by can be found crazy golf and recreational facilities aimed at families with children.
  • Adjacent is Low Green, an extensive, flat and grassy area suitable for picnics and leisure activities.
  • Suitable for cycling, bird watching and fishing.
