Loudon Hall, Ayr, Scotland

This evening, I am posting information on a very ancient Scottish building known as Loudoun Hall in Ayr. Key facts and information as follows:

  • Located in the Boat Vennel close to the navigable waterfront.
  • Location no doubt influenced by the occupation of original 15th century owner, James Tait, who was a wealthy merchant¬†engaged in trade with countries in mainland Europe.
  • In the 16th century it became a town residence for the powerful Campbells of Loudoun who were the hereditary sheriffs of Ayr and one of the oldest families in Scotland.
  • Rescued and restored from dilapidation in the 20th century by the 4th Marquess of Bute.
  • Now home to a number of societies including:
    • Ayrshire Archaeological and Natural History.
    • Ayrshire Philatelic.
    • Ayr Photographic.
  • One of the oldest buildings in Ayr and an important example of Scots heritage.
