Old College Bar, Glasgow, Scotland

This evening, I am posting information on the Old College Bar which is a strong contender for the oldest bar in Glasgow, having served drinks continually since 1812. A proud notice outside states the history goes back to its construction in 1515 from when it operated as a Public House, Staging Post and Hostelry.

Location is 219 High Street. In days past High Street was an important thoroughfare running on an axis between Glasgow Cathedral and the River Clyde. In fact, in medieval times High Street was Glasgow’s main street, but no longer.Unfortunately, the Bar now sits on the edge of Glasgow’s Merchant City and there are press reports of an application to demolish the building, although it is believed to be structurally sound.

The academic sounding name derives from former proximity to Glasgow University which was located close by in the High Street between 1460 and 1870.

The bar serves beer, wine and spirits. Live music is also provided.
