People’s Palace, Glasgow Green, Scotland

This evening, I am posting information on the People’s Palace located on Glasgow Green. The latter being an open amenity space for the local people with a history tracing back to 1450.

The People’s Palace and Winter Gardens was opened in 1898. There are two aspects to this building: a heated glasshouse with tropical plants and a social history museum. The former contains a refreshment area and is primarily for recreation whilst the museum tells the story of Glasgow and its people from 1750 onwards.

The museum is focused on the lives of ordinary Glaswegians and provides insight into their lives from 1750 onwards via a wide range of exhibits which include objects, prints, paintings, photographs and reproductions of shops and other facilities such as the ‘steamie’ where family washing was undertaken prior to introduction of modern washing machines.
