Abbotsford House, Melrose, Scottish Borders.

This evening, I am focusing on Abbotsford House, a major visitor attraction on the south bank of the River Tweed near Melrose in the Scottish Borders. Location is about one hour south of Edinburgh.

The Abbotsford site was first acquired by the Scottish romantic novelist, Sir Walter Scott ( 1771-1832)¬†in 1811 and thereafter the mansion grew to its current size under Sir Walter’s supervision.

Sir Walter Scott achieved worldwide fame principally through his series of twenty-six romantic, historic novels collectively known at the Waverley Novels which include such famous works as:

  • Heart of Midlothian
  • Ivanhoe
  • Rob Roy
  • Lady of the Lake
  • Waverley

Sir Walter’s writings acted as a catalyst¬†for tourism in Scotland during the 19th century.

Today, the visitor experience is enhanced by a new Visitor Centre, separate from Abbotsford House. In addition to the historic house there are well maintained gardens to admire.
