Maryhill Barracks, Glasgow, Scotland

This evening, I am posting information on the former Maryhill Barracks in N.W. Glasgow.

The core barracks buildings were demolished in 1961 leaving in situ parts of the former perimeter wall, an entrance and guard-room. Within the walls the site was redeveloped for high density social housing which remains today and is known as the Wyndford Housing Scheme.

A summary of the former Barracks is as follows:

  • Constructed of local stone and opened  in 1877 to accommodate an infantry regiment, a squadron of cavalry and a battery of field artillery.
  • During its life the Barracks was associated with many Scottish regiments and military units but predominantly:
    • The Highland Light Infantry.
    • City of Glasgow Regiment.
    • Royal Highland Fusiliers (Princess Margaret’s Own Glasgow and Ayrshire Regiment)
    • Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.
