Mearns Kirk, Newton Mearns, Scotland

This morning, I ventured to visit Mearns Kirk which is located south of Glasgow, Scotland.

Kirk is a Scots ( and Northern European) word for church.

The site is elevated relative to the local landscape. It is likely there was a Celtic Church here around AD 800 which was replaced by an Anglo-Norman ( Catholic)  church ( c. 12th century). The fabric of the latter deteriorated over the centuries requiring replacement by the current building in 1813. Further renovation and restoration occurred in 1932 and 2000. In 1932 the pipe organ from Glasgow City Hall was transferred to the Kirk parts of which remain in situ today.

Mearns Kirk is part of the Church of Scotland which follows the Presbyterian style of worship.

The adjacent burial ground is well endowed with grave-markers and tombstones dating back to the 18th century.
