Tour Group at Cameron Fountain

Today, I joined a small group walking tour to explore architectural and important¬†visitor sites in Glasgow’s West End. Here is a summary of the tour schedule:

  • Met at Cameron Fountain in the Charing Cross area, close to Charing Cross Mansions. The terracotta Fountain dates from 1896 and was erected as a tribute¬†to temperance campaigner and Liberal M.P. Sir Charles Cameron (1843-1913). Today, the Fountain lists slightly due to subsidence.
  • Next to the Mitchell Library, which dates back to 1911 and is an important reference source for family history research.
  • Next to the upscale, Park District with some impressive former church buildings and 19th century residences. We were able to visit te interior of no.7 Park Terrace, now a Youth Hostel, to inspect the interior. No 7 dates from around 1852 and was home to various business and professional people before becoming a hotel in 1943.
  • Next to Glasgow University at Gilmorehill. Although founded in 1451 the current building dates from 1870. We availed of refreshment here.
  • Next, down through Kelvin Park, past statues of Field Marshall Earl Roberts and Thomas Carlyle and across the Kelvin River to Glasgow University at Gilmorehill.
  • ¬†Although founded in 1451 the current University building dates from 1870. We availed of refreshment here. Glasgow University ranks within the world’s top 100 such establishments.
  • Next to Kelvingrove¬†Art Gallery & Museum, one of the top such institutions in Europe.¬†Here we inspected the Mackintosh Room and viewed various specialist art displays, including the famous Salvador Dali painting of Christ of St. John of the Cross, after which the tour terminated, thus concluding an enjoyable and informative experience.
