Fenwick Road, Giffnock, Glasgow, Scotland

This evening, I am posting information on Giffnock, an upmarket dormitory suburb of Glasgow which lies to the south of the city.

The name provides a link with the Brittonic ( Welsh) language which was formerly spoken in S.W.Scotland as Giffnock translates at ‘ridge-knoll’ being a combination of cefyn (Brittonic) and knock (Scots).

The population of Giffnock is approximately 16,000 and the suburb falls within the county of East Renfrewshire.

Giffnock has a wide range of retail and other facilities for its population, viz:

  • Four banks.
  • Two car dealers ( BMW and Mercedes).
  • Rouken Glen Park ( Recreation).
  • Churches for a wide range of denominations.
  • Synagogue.
  • Hotel.
  • Upscale, Wholefood Market ( American owned).
  • Supermarket.
  • Specialist shops and restaurants.
  • Railway station with frequent services to Glasgow.
  • Regular bus services to Glasgow.
  • Medical and opticians.
  • Schools which regularly feature in Scotland’s top league tables.
