Badenoch, Scotland

Main feature today was the warm and brilliant sunshine which benefited our tour throughout the day.

We departed our lodgings in Grantown-on-Spey and then drove south to our first stop at Ruthven Barracks near Kingussie. These are ruined British military ‘Redcoat‘ barracks built in 1721 as a base for unit of soldiers whose role was to police the Highlands and deter Jacobites. The barracks are built on the motte of two former castles dating from the 13th and 15th centuries. Ruthven Barracks were destroyed by the defeated Jacobite army in 1746 after the Battle of Culloden and have remained in a ruined state ever since, The site offers good views of the Cairngorm Mountains to the east and Monadhliath Mountains to the west.
