Three-masted sailing ship leaving Port Ellen today

Today, we toured two Islay Distilleries, had lunch at another and visited an early Christian site, viz:

First, we called at Laphroaig Distillery, which is now owned by Suntory of Japan. Here guests joined the Distillers Wares Tour, which was very detailed lasted over two hours. participants were taken through the malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation and maturation processes with the tour culmination in sampling of five malts plus opportunity to self-bottle.

Laphroaig was founded in 1810, produces a heavily peated malt and key product is a 10 year old.

Next, we drove to nearby Kildalton High Cross and Old Parish Church. The cross is 2.65 metres high and dates from the 8th century AD. Incredibly, the cross still stands in the original position where is was erected over 1200 years ago. The cross was likely used as a preaching aid contains many symbols and messages in the intricate carvings which are still visible.

The church may date back to the late 12th century or early 13th century. Due to population movements, the church ceased to be used at end of 18th century.
