St. Mary's Church

St. Mary’s Church

This evening, I am posting information on the Cumbrian town of Ambleside which is an excellent, central base for touring the Lake District. Summary information:

  • The site has a long history of occupation, from prehistory, Roman period and onwards. However, the current town is essentially 18th century, Victorian.
  • Close to Lake Windermere and boat trips thereon.
  • Well known to famous British writers and conservationists, William Wordsworth ( poet) and Beatrix Potter ( Children’s author).
  • Near the centre is attractive church, St. Mary’s,¬†dating from 1854 and designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott.
  • Well endowed with hotels, guest houses and other lodgings. Also restaurants and other visitor attractions including the unusual Bridge House.
  • Extremely popular and can be very busy during the tourist season.
