Bowmore, Islay, Scotland

This evening, I am posting information on the village of Bowmore which is administrative capital of the island of Islay which lies off the West Coast of Scotland.

Bowmore is famous for the Whisky Distillery of the same name but there are many facets to this village, viz:

  • Dates from 1770.
  • Is dominated by the ’round church’ which dates from 1767. The formal title of this buidling is Kilarrow Parish Church which belongs to the Church of Scotland.
  • Sits on shores of Loch Indaal.
  • Within the village can be found a variety of shops, lodgings, restaurants, bank, a Gaelic cultural centre and even a swimming pool.
  • Roughly equidistant between ferry ports of Port Askaig and Port Ellen.
  • In addition to Bowmore Distillery, other distilleries such as Bruichladdich and Kilchoman are in relatively close proximity.

Overall, Bowmore is a good, central base for visiting Islay.
