Today, visited three Islay Whisky Distilleries. In each case we participated in tours which took us through each of the key processes of malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation and maturation.

Bowmore

This was our first call. Summary facts:

  • Established 1779.
  • Owned by Suntory of Japan.
  • Capacity of 2.0m litres p.a.
  • Has traditional Maltings Floor which produces some of the distillery’s malt needs with balance rom Port Ellen Maltings.
  • The product is peated.
  • Principal malt is a 12 year old.

Bruichladdich

  • Established 1881
  • Owned by Remy Cointreau of France
  • Capacity is 1.5m litres p.a.
  • Produces a range of peated and unpeated malts.
  • Key products are 12 year old and Port Charlotte PC8

Kilchoman

  • The smallest distillery on Islay.
  • Started 2002 with production commencing 2005.
  • Capacity 110,000 litres p.a.
  • Has own floor maltings with local fIelds producing much of the barley needs.
  • A range of young, peated malts are available.
  • Privately owned by Andrew Wills.
