Muthill Old Church and Tower, Perthshire, Scotland

This evening, I am posting information on Muthill Old Church near Crieff in central Scotland.

Although abandoned since 1818 the structure, particularly the tower, is of some antiquity and shares architectural features with some other churches in the same region, namely, Dunning, Dunblane, Markinch and St. Andrews as shown at foot of this post.

The tower dates from the 12th century and is built in the Romanesque style with hints of Celtic influences. This was once free-standing.

The Nave and Chancel date from the 15th century with evidence of an earlier tower embedded in the West of the Nave.

There may well have been earlier Christian buildings on the same site at Muthill which pre-dated the Tower.

An intriguing site. Entrance is free. The grounds of the site have been used for burials.
