Highland Cow at Pollok Country Park, Glasgow, Scotland

Today was characterised by persistent rain but relatively mild temperatures. I took the opportunity to visit the 100 strong herd of Highland Cattle which can be found at the 146 hectare, Pollok Country Park located S.W. of Glasgow, just three miles from the city centre.

This pedigree herd is actually owned and managed by Glasgow City Council.

Highland Cattle originated in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. They are an ancient breed, with records dating to the early 1800s, and very well suited to harsh, high altitude conditions where they thrive on poor grazing and food sources that modern breeds refuse- see image above of cow devouring a sprig of rhododendron.

The combination of placed temperament and shaggy coats renders the animals very photogenic.
