This evening, I am posting information on the Scottish Highland village of Muir of Ord which is situated about 13 miles west of Inverness. Key facts and information:

  • The name Muir could mean either ‘moor’ or ‘sea’ whilst Ord means ‘hammer shaped hill’.
  • Population is about 3000.
  • Local resources include Golf Club, Railway Station and Whisky Distillery, Glen Ord.
  • The village has its own football ( soccer) team.
  • There is a mix of shops and accommodation although the last remaining bank branch is scheduled to close in 2015.
  • Good views can be obtained of Ben Wyvis, a mountain with height of 3432 feet ( 1046 m) which translates from the Gaelic as ‘Hill of Terror’.
