Skibo Castle, Scotland

This evening, I am posting information and images on Skibo Castle near Dornoch in the Scottish Highlands, about 43 miles north of Inverness.

Skibo is not open to the public and is operated as a private, members only hotel and country club known as the Carnegie Club.

This is an extremely highly rated facility with members enjoying a wide range of facilities and activities including golf, biking, horse riding, 4X4 off-road, swimming, etc.

Other facts and information concerning Skibo Castle:

  • The current building is mainly attributed to restoration and development undertaken in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by super-rich industrialist, Andrew Carnegie. However, there is a long history of  a high status building (castle) on this site dating back to the 12th century.
  • Known for hosting celebrity weddings.
  • Membership of the Club is restricted to 250.
  • The landscaped grounds and gardens are deemed to be of national importance (Scotland).
  • As will be evident from images herein, the gardens surrounding the castle are vibrant and well maintained.
  • The name Skibo is of Scandinavian ( Viking) origin.
