Milnholm Cross,Newcastleton, Scottish Borders

This evening, I am providing images and information concerning the Milnholm Cross in the Scottish Borders region.

This ancient cross is located about 1 miles south of the village of Newcastleton which in turn is about 74 miles south of Edinburgh.

The cross has special importance for members of Clan Armstrong which has a museum in nearby Langholm and is particularly  strong in the Borders region with a legacy dating back to the time of the Border Reivers ( 13th-17th centuries).

It is believed the cross was erected circa 1320 in memory of Alexander Armstrong, the Laird of Mangerton, following his murder at nearby Hermitage Castle.

The cross is 8 feet 3 inches high. Just below the cross-head can be seen the initials MA and AA.

A visit to this cross usually features within a tour of Clan Armstrong related sites.
